Shade Trees, Ornamental Trees and Understory Trees

There are basically three categories of trees you should be thinking about when installing them into your landscape. Shade trees, Ornamental Trees and Understory Trees. You should also consider, when to plant, where to plant and how to plant. Value, increasing value and setting perception are very important when planting trees on your property. Native shade trees are the trees that add the most value to your real-estate. This should be your first choice when considering species to plant.

There are two types of Shade Trees; Native and Exotic. Native trees by far are the most valuable, generally slower growing with fewer issues than others. Native trees are larger with the longest life span. Some examples of native species are: Green Ash, Elm (American, Cedar, Hackberry), Oak (Chinquapin, Bur, Shumard, Live Oak), Pecan, Red Cedar and Western Soapberry.

Shade trees, Ornamental Trees and Understory Trees

Ornamental Trees are native trees that provide added value to the landscape through color, layering, screening and textures especially when planted and placed correctly. A few examples of Ornamental trees that are native to our area of North Texas are: Mexican Plum, Mexican Buckeye, Red Bud & varieties, Sumac, Fruitless Pear & varieties. Then there are trees that are native to Texas but just slightly out of our geographic range, such as: Mountain Laurel, Texas Persimmon, Big Tooth Maple, Desert Willow, Dogwood, Tree of Senna, American Smoke tree.

Finally, the Exotic Shade Trees are Evergreens, such as: Deodar Cedar, Arizona Cypress, Arborvitae, Austrian Black Pine, Japanese Black Pine, Afghan Pine. Understory Trees: Are specialized trees that survive below canopies and are generally small and flower. Examples of these species would be: Eve’s Necklace, Roughleaf Dogwood, Rusty Blackhaw Viburnum.
