Aphids and Mites and Bagworms, OH MY!

This is the time of year we begin to notice all types of tree feeding pests.  Many of them are difficult to see if you don’t know what to look for.

Aphids are small green to brown insects that usually live on the under sides of leaves. They feed on a wide array of plant species, but look for them on your crape myrtles right now.  They produce sticky honeydew that will cover leaves and plants underneath the tree.

Spider mites are microscopic critters that also live on the undersides of leaves.  Their are many different species that feed on many different plants. Look for bronze colored leaves on: Junipers, cypress, cedar elms and live oaks.

Bagworms are caterpillars that live inside of a cocoon like structure.  Their favorite foods are Junipers, Leyland and Italian cypress, however they have been found on almost everything.  The small bags they make are made out of silk and plant parts, this is their camouflage.
